ServeFest Recap

ServeFest was a huge success, and you guys really did a great job embracing the spirit of serving. 200 people from CCC joined 1000 other volunteers from Baltimore County to make a significant impact in our communities. Community Christian Church had one of the highest numbers of volunteers participating in ServeFest Baltimore County. In one day throughout the Baltimore area, over 3,500 volunteers from 100 different churches served on 163 projects. Together we really blessed people in the Baltimore area and showed our communities that we care.

Let’s take ServeFest beyond one day of serving by continuing to serve our neighbors all throughout the year.

212 Video Update 4.26.2012

The Pantry

On April 15, generosity looked like three car loads of food! We had our initial food drive for The Pantry, and we’re off and running. Volunteers are setting up shelves and getting organized so we’ll be able to start helping families very soon.

Small Group Serving Together

Our small group is really excited about the opportunity to serve with Araminta rescuing girls from human trafficking right here in our community. A group home is being set up to house some of these girls, and our small group helped supply some of the baby furniture needed in the home. Ten of us went to the house on Saturday, March 10 to assist in putting things together, making beds, unloading furniture, hanging blinds, and much more. We had a blast serving together and blessing these girls whom we will probably never know.

212 is about being generous in radical ways. I don’t know if spending your Saturday and a little money helping someone you’ll never meet is considered radical, but it certainly was rewarding. We had a blast hanging out together knowing we were doing something that will really make a difference in the lives of these girls. Our small group would like to challenge you to find a way to be generous today.

The Pantry

Our 212 journey has inspired some folks to start a food pantry to help CCC families who might be struggling a bit financially. We’re still in the start up phase, but there are a couple of ways you can help out right now.

One way to join in is to bring the coupon insert from your newspaper to CCC each Sunday.  We’ll be collecting them at the 212 table. You might even have some friends or neighbors who would be willing to give you their coupons as well.  The coupons will help us get food at greatly reduced prices or even for free.

Another way you can share in the start up of the pantry is to help us acquire some supplies needed for food storage. Shelving has already been donated, but we need 66qt. clear tubs with lids for food storage.  Consider purchasing a tub for the pantry and bringing it to CCC on Sunday as well. As soon as we’re set up, we’ll be ready to stock the pantry and start meeting needs. This is a great way for us to be generous right here at CCC.

Araminta Freedom Initiative Action Night

CCC was so generous supporting Araminta’s first action night!  Thanks to everyone who came out and asked themselves the question, “What can I do to help?”  This was a 212 moment for me and all of the Araminta team as we saw over 200 people from local churches show up on February 17th.  We felt so blessed to be able to help guide folks that had their hearts broken over this issue of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking and to give them action steps to respond to that ache.  As a group, we all could relate to that frustration of finding out about something so dark and horrific that you think you can’t bear to look at it or be exposed to it as you hear the stories.  But then God….

This is the beautiful way that God has carried us in this.  We start with praise and worship always!  We center our hearts and minds on Christ and His redeeming love and almighty power to heal and transform.  Love that doesn’t fail and hope that won’t give up is the driving force.  And lots of prayer!  It’s a privilege and an honor to have so many members of Community Christian Church deciding to turn up the heat and live radically generous lives in this way!  God continually has blown me away with the ways He provides the right people at the right time when we need them most.  David mentioned this in the 3rd week of the GPS series- “Principle #3- God’s plan is to have the right person in the right place for His right purposes.”  He has faithfully shown us how He does that in our journey so far.  It’s great to know that God is always with you…working even when you wait in the dark!

Thank you CCC for all your prayers, support and generosity!

There is one more opportunity to get involved this Thursday, March 8th, Araminta is having one last Action Night before the next levels begin March 22nd.  If this is something you wanted to check out but missed the last one, come out March 8th 7-8:30pm to 1st Lutheran Church, 40E Burke Ave. in Towson, MD 21286.  Registration opens at 6:30pm and space is limited so please RSVP to .

Here’s an Opportunity to Influence Our Community

We have an opportunity to make a difference for some students at Dundalk Middle School. As a Title 1 school, many of their students don’t have the necessary school supplies needed to succeed in class. The school contacted CCC asking for help providing 3 ring binders for some of their students during the last half of the school year.  If you would like to help out, pick up a few regular or zipper 3 ring binders when you’re out shopping this week and bring them to CCC when you come. This is a simple way we can turn up the heat and be generous.

God Has Always Been Faithful to Provide

My wife Jennifer and I talked about a number of different changes we wanted to make in order to contribute more to CCC as part of 212. One thing we did was do away with some monthly costs for things we could do without, as well as cut down costs for other things like cell phones, cable, etc. In the process of investigating where we could save money I stumbled upon something. I was talking to a representative about our home insurance and found out we had not been getting a discount we should have gotten. So, for 5 years we did not get a discount that added up to $450. It didn’t take much effort from me to have them reimburse us for that amount.

Like many CCC folks, we settled on a 212 giving goal that would require God to get involved for us to be able to reach it. Our experience in the past has been that God has always been faithful to provide when we are faithful to give first. This case was no different, and that $450 is one of the many ways we hope God will move in order to help us reach our 212 goal.

I Would Like to Thank My Small Group Members

212 is about challenging all of us to live radically generous lives. One way we hope to be generous is by serving our community. Small groups at CCC are encouraged to serve together and one member of a CCC small group shared a story about how her group is helping homeless patients at her hospital.

I am a Registered Nurse at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and care for a lot of homeless patients on my unit. During the 212 kickoff, I had mentioned to the members of my small group the need for clothes for the homeless patients. The small group members embraced the idea to reach out to these patients with kindness and generosity. They offered their own personal clothing items (coats, sweatshirts, flannel shirts, gloves, socks and hats) and some new items that they purchased. One member (Sue) even came to my house to drop off items of clothing in a nice shoulder bag, for a specific patient in immediate need of help. I would like to thank my small group members for their love and compassion for those in need!

God Bless,

CCC – 1, BED BUGS – 0

I received a phone call last week from one of CCC’s partner schools asking for our help. One of their families, who had been homeless, recently secured a residence. This is exciting news; however, they were inundated with bed bugs. The little kids were getting eaten up by the bugs, and the family was trying to save up enough money to pay for the extermination. We put a quick message out to our small groups and ministry volunteers, and people stepped up right away with donations. When I called the mother to tell her CCC was going to pay for the extermination, she was ecstatic. She could not believe it. I contacted the exterminating company to work out the details, and the salesman was amazed that our church was so generous.

One more story of how generosity is making a difference in people’s lives.  Way to turn up the heat CCC! We’re influencing our community!
